Examination of the works

To verify the attribution of a work to Emilio Scanavino, or to find out whether it has already been filed in the database of the Fondazione, a direct examination of it must be requested.

The Foundation expresses opinions of attribution only through direct analysis of the works and not through examination of photographic, paper or digital documentation alone.

The Authentication Committee meets about three times a year, indicatively in the months of February, May and November (unless necessary variations occur).

The Foundation does not carry out economic evaluations of the works.

Preliminary phase

At the preliminary phase, send a digital colour photograph of the front of the work and one of the back, in a good resolution that allows clearly identifying its most meaningful details, to autentiche@fondazionescanavino.org.

Additionally, it is necessary to communicate:

  • the size of the work

  • the execution technique

  • the information on its provenance

By requesting to be included in the mailing list, it is possible to receive, well in advance, the notice to participate in the next Committee and to receive information regarding the procedure to follow.

Examination of the works

The work is analysed through direct examination by the Authentication Committee, in order to attest attribution to the artist. If the work is not already known, it is filed in the database. If it is already present, the Committee verifies that is precisely the original and not a copy or a graphic work.

It should be noted that following only an examination the works and archiving them, the register number under which the work is filed in the database will not be communicated, but a file viewing number will be made available. The register number appears only on the authentication certificate.

Such certification must be explicitly requested after the examination of the work (see authentication of works).

The works to be submitted to our examination should be delivered by an individual to our office and accompanied by the required material (see required material). They will be returned immediately after the visual examination (lasting about 30 minutes) without remaining in storage.

N.B. Only works not installed in a frame will be examined (with the exception of the original wooden frame made by the artist), with no glass, with verso and recto that can be inspected.

Failing this, the examination will be postponed.

Extraordinary viewings for professionals in the field

An informal consultation can be requested at any time and by appointment only, in order to facilitate the free circulation of Emilio Scanavino's works for Galleries and Auction Houses.

This service is valid only for professionals in the field.

The material required and costs are the same as those for standard practice.

For more information and to make an appointment, write to autentiche@fondazionescanavino.org.

Required material

The following documentation is necessary (for each work), and must be delivered together with the work:

  • no. 1 CD/USB stick for each work, containing:

  • no. 1 colour image file of the front in jpg format, minimum resolution 300dpi (CMYK), short side 30 cm.

  • no. 1 colour image file of the back in jpg format, minimum resolution 300dpi (CMYK), short side 30 cm.

  • no. 1 colour image file of the front in tiff format, minimum resolution 600dpi (CMYK), short side 30 cm.

N.B. The professional photographs must be in colour (with colour scale).

The prints are required in paper format 18x24 cm., on photographic paper, (preferably Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper Supreme or similar).

For sculptures and ceramic works, the photographs must represent all angles, a detail of the signature and of underneath the base.

The Fondazione reserves the right to refuse non-pertinent documentation and to request new or supplementary material. The material must accompany the work when the work itself is delivered and not sent before or subsequently. Failing this, the examination will be postponed.

  • Forms

Attached to the notice for participation in the Authentication Committee, you will receive the required forms, which are to be delivered already filled out and signed, along with the work.

For individuals, the following is also requested:

- copy of identity document

- tax identification number of the person in whose name the invoice is issued.

Authentication of works

It will be possible to issue the certificate only after the work has been examined and its attribution to the artist ascertained.

Following the Committee’s analysis, a form for requesting the certificate of authentication will be sent to applicants, which must be filled out, signed, and sent back to autentiche@fondazionescanavino.org along with proof of payment (see costs).

The request for the issuance of the authentication certificate is not mandatory but is at the discretion of the owner of the work. It should be noted that the register number under which the work is filed in the database appears only on certificates of authentication.
